Breast Dodgeball Official Rules
These are the official rules for the Breast in the West Dodgeball Tournament. These are an abbreviated modified version of the official NADA Rule Book. Each team is responsible for reviewing and understanding the rules before participating in the tournament.
THE TEAM
Teams will be made up of 6-8 players. Six players will compete on a side; up to two reserves will be available as substitutes. Teams are mixed and must have at least 3 males or females on the roster. There must be a minimum of 2 males or 2 females in the starting lineup (starting 6) of every game.
THE FIELD
The games will be played indoors (at SouthRAC). The playing field shall be a rectangle 52-ft long and and 43-ft wide, divided into two equal sections by a center-line and attack-lines 5ft from, and parallel to the centerline. Each playing Dodgeball court measurements: 52’ x 43’.
THE EQUIPMENT
The official balls used in tournament play will be official Rhino Skin 8" Dodgeballs.
THE GAME
The object of the game is to eliminate all opposing players by getting them "OUT". This may be done by:
1. Hitting an opposing player with a LIVE thrown ball below the shoulders.
2. Catching a LIVE ball thrown by your opponent before it touches the ground.
3. Causing an opponent to drop a live ball as a result of contact of another thrown live ball. (This usually occurs when a ball is used to block another ball).
4. A player may eliminate him/herself by crossing over the center line at any time.
ALSO: If a player catches a LIVE ball thrown by an opposing player, the player who has thrown the ball is out. This catch also releases an eliminated player (in order they were eliminated in) for the defending team. Note: If there are no eliminated players for the defending team, this action only eliminates the opposing player who threw the ball
*When a person is eliminated he/she must immediately exit the playing field into the designation elimination holding area where he/she will wait to be released back into field of play with a team “catch” or until the match is over. *BLOCKING BALLS: If a player has a ball in his/her possession this ball can be used as a shield to block or deflect LIVE balls. *Definition: LIVE: A ball that has been thrown and has not touched anything, including the floor/ground, another ball, official or other item outside of the playing field (wall, ceiling, etc)
BOUNDARIES
During play, all players must remain within the boundary lines. South Reno Athletic Clubs’ courts are fully enclosed with the side and back walls marking the boundary lines.
THE OPENING RUSH
Game begins by placing the dodgeballs along the center line – three (3) on one side of the center hash and three (3) on the other. Players then take a position with one at least one foot or hand touching the back wall. Following a signal by the official, teams may approach the centerline to retrieve the balls. Teams may only retrieve the three (3) balls to their right of the center hash. This signal officially starts the contest. Once a ball is retrieved it must be taken behind the attack-line (line marked 5 feet behind center line) before it can be legally thrown. Note: Each player may retrieve only 1 ball at the start of the game. Players cannot swat/hit balls back from the centerline to their teammates.
TIMING AND WINNING A GAME
The first team to legally eliminate all opposing players will be declared the winner. A five-minute time limit has been established for each contest. If neither team has been eliminated at the end of the five minutes, the team with the greater number of players remaining will be declared the winner. In the case of an equal number of player/s remaining after regulation, a 1-minute sudden-death overtime period will be played. The player/s remaining on each side will compete in the overtime period and subsequent sudden-death periods will occur if needed.
TIME-OUTS & SUBSTITUTIONS
No timeouts or substitutions will be allowed unless called by a referee for injury or any other reason he/she feels necessary. Roster changes must be made prior to each game. At least 1 female player must be playing for each team at a time.
5-SECOND VIOLATION
In order to reduce stalling, a violation will be called if a team controls all six (6) balls on their side of the court for more than five seconds. The team controlling all six dodgeballs must return at least one dodgeball beyond the opponent’s attack line.
RULE ENFORCEMENT
The Breast in the West Dodgeball Tournament operates under the Honor System and participants are expected to compete and comply with tournament rules honestly. A minimum of two referees officiate each Breast Dodgeball match and will abide by this set of rules to call the games. The officials will rule on all legal hits, catches and five-second violations. The referees’ decisions are final, and arguing calls can lead to a player’s elimination from the game and/or match and/or tournament at referees’ discretion.
Code of Conduct

3. Respect your opponent and congratulate them in a courteous manner following each match whether in victory or defeat.
